Ron Wellman

Ron Wellman served as Wake Forest’s athletic director from October 1992 until his retirement in April 2019. During his 27 years, Wake Forest won 24 ACC Championships and 5 NCAA team championships as well as seven individual national titles. Under Wellman’s leadership, Wake Forest produced 10 national players of the year, four national freshman of the year awards, and 189 first team All-Americans. Wellman oversaw 655 first team All-ACC selections, 45 ACC Players of the Year and 40 ACC Coaches of the Year, 40 ACC Freshman of the Year awards, 21 ACC Tournament MVPs, and 27 Academic All-Americans. A former president of the Division I-A Athletic Directors’ Association, Wellman served on the NCAA Diversity Leadership Strategic Planning Committee. Under Wellman’s watch, Wake Forest invested $250 million into athletics construction projects since 2008 ranging from McCreary Tower at BB&T Field, to the purchase of David F. Couch Ballpark and the LJVM Coliseum from the City of Winston-Salem.
